Jay Gatsby is none other than a mere fantasy. The true identity of this hopeless man is delirious for the ideal prosperous life. James Gatz has lost his mind.
The song Crazy by Gnarls Barkley explores the internal chaos of a disoriented mind. In an interview a member of the duo, Danger Mouse, explains his inspiration for the song came from the outrageous culture of respecting artists that are insane. The artists composed this musical masterpiece that simply translates to 'I don't know what I'm doing anymore'.
In this song, the mind is depicted as a pleasant emotional space of comfort. Escaping out of it brings one to an unforgiving reality "out of touch", because the bliss of ignorance is now gone, and they "just knew too much". When the euphoric dream of Jay Gatsby enters a new world, James is hit was the harsh truth that the love of his life has a life of her own. His attempts to piece together his magical past is shattered as he begins to learn that the world has moved on. This shock has made him crazy.
Ha, ha, ha bless your soul Jay Gatsby. You really think you're in control, but James is. Everything is spiraling out of your hand because you're holding on so tightly to a vision that has already perished; a delusion. It may have looked like fun when you were younger, but you will never be the hero of Gatsby that you have always aspired to be. Your wealth will buy you the grandest house, the most extravagant of parties, but in the end you are left alone in the echo of the empty mansion that is your deranged mind.

I love how you compare Gatsby’s mental state to a song. It really illustrates how naïve Gatsby was to literally try to turn back time to get Daisy back. I think that Gatsby would have benefitted from someone saying this to him 😭😭 but literally everyone who knew about it supported his delusions.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the lead! It really strung me in and I got interested in the content! I also thought this was a really unique view on Gatsby
